Hi folks! The gravestones are actually from families that have died out or simply forgotten.

In Japan almost all bodies are cremated. The bones and some ash that remain are mixed in with those of the ancestors. The Temples do not get rid of the stones yet since land is at a premium here they stack them up so that the plots can be transferred to another family.

Some places have truly enormous pyramids of family stones.
